The Medical Approach
According to The Sexual Medicine Society of America, premature or rapid ejaculation affects 25 – 30% of ALL men.
Many wait for years to get treatment, an unnecessary delay as the situation improves in almost all cases without extensive costs or time invested. We start the medical side of the process by examining the patient and taking a history. Options for treatment include medication and/or behavioral therapy. Finally we adjust the dose of medication or choice of medications for optimal benefit.
The Psychological Approach
When the issue is remedied medically, therapy may or may not be indicated. Even those with a clear medical issue behind their premature ejaculation, however, can benefit by discussing sexual concerns with a therapist.
Sometimes, those struggling with premature ejaculation lack adequate information about their own sexuality and sexuality in general. Therapy can help patients understand behavioral approaches to and causes of premature ejaculation. During therapy, clients learn how to use scenarios and exercises to improve not only performance, but communication and mutual enjoyment as well.
